Tips for tuning a viola

The viola is tuned a fifth below the violin: it shares the violin's G, D and A strings and adds a low C. As with violin, tune the A first and work outwards in fifths.

Tune in a quiet room, play one string at a time, and let it ring past the initial attack before you read the needle. Within ±5 cents is in tune for almost any purpose. Your audio is analysed in your browser and never uploaded.

How do I tune a viola without a tuner?

Tap each string's reference tone on this page and adjust the peg until the string matches it. When two notes are almost the same you'll hear a slow wobble; it disappears when they match.
