How to find the BPM of a song
Play the song and tap on every beat, usually where you'd nod your head or tap your foot. The tempo appears after four taps and gets more precise the longer you tap. Stop for two seconds and it starts a new reading.
Common tempos
- Ballads: 60–80 BPM
- Hip-hop: 80–100 BPM
- Pop and rock: 100–130 BPM
- House: 120–128 BPM
- Drum and bass: 160–180 BPM
If a song feels twice as fast as your reading, you may be tapping every other beat: double it.
Questions
How accurate is tap tempo?
It averages your last dozen taps, so after 10 or more taps it's usually within one BPM of the real tempo.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. The space bar and Enter both count as taps.
What's the difference between BPM and tempo?
They're the same thing: BPM (beats per minute) is how tempo is measured.
