Tips for tuning a guitar

A memory trick for the string order, thickest to thinnest: Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie. Tune each string up to its note, then check them all once more, because tuning one string shifts the tension on the others.

Tune in a quiet room, play one string at a time, and let it ring past the initial attack before you read the needle. Within ±5 cents is in tune for almost any purpose. Your audio is analysed in your browser and never uploaded.

Questions

What are the notes of a guitar in standard tuning?

From the lowest string: E2 (82.41 Hz), A2 (110.00 Hz), D3 (146.83 Hz), G3 (196.00 Hz), B3 (246.94 Hz), E4 (329.63 Hz).

How do I tune a guitar without a tuner?

Tap each string's reference tone on this page and adjust the peg until the string matches it. When two notes are almost the same you'll hear a slow wobble; it disappears when they match.

Does the tuner work on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in your phone's browser, allow the microphone and hold the phone close to the instrument.
